Had an interesting discussion with a colleague today, we do this regularly, as I am coaching him a little bit. During different topics we came to the phenomenon that companies out of different industries are trying to become Software companies now, as their product is more and more driven or developed by software.
In October 2000 Marc Andreessen (https://www.forbes.com/profile/marc-andreessen/#2f30583357aa) came up with the phrase "Software Is Eating the World" https://quoteinvestigator.com/2018/01/24/software/
When the plan is there to become a Software company, the reference is normally Google, kind of a stretch goal. But already a first indication that the people coming up with these kind of ideas have not a lot of understanding of the topics they are talking about 🙃. Google made 6.7 Billion US$ revenue in the Q1-2019 quarter - https://www.sec.gov/ix?doc=/Archives/edgar/data/1652044/000165204419000015/goog10-qq12019.htm, mainly from advertisement and their customer data. As top brand and most attractive employer, they can get any talent/expert/guru on the world to develop software for them. They can offer best hardware, software and work environments, as they have the money, standards and experience for years.
How can any company that did not start as software development company come up with the idea to change and to start battling with Google? A vision gone bad? Would it not be much better, to become the best possible you, and not a bad copy of somebody else? Also a good proposal for individuals, in their business and personal life.
We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers - but never blame yourself. It's never your fault. But it's always your fault, because if you wanted to change you're the one who has got to change. Katharine Hepburn, American - Actress May 12, 1907 - June 29, 2003
