A good week with two records is over and the first version of the article for the blog post in the company as well. I am already thinking about a new topic, as you might guess it is related to leadership versus management. In alignment with the Peter Drucker quote:

"Management is doing things right; Leadership is doing the right things." -- Peter Drucker https://www.druckerforum.org/peter-f-drucker/ (Nov. 19, 1909 – Nov. 11, 2005). Peter Drucker was very early with his management theories. In the meantime a lot more is happening around this topic in the Agile world. Only one of several examples are the Management 3.0 principles - Principle #4 Managing the system, not the people -    https://management30.com/learn/principles/. Fits perfectly well to the idea of self-managed teams that are becoming more and more independent from their managers.

When I was still working as a manager in the past I had two guiding principles:

  1. Managers are only required until everything runs smoothly
  2. Managers should make themselves redundant over time

In summary, the employees do know how to do things right in the meantime and maybe did know in the past already? They just need some leadership for the general direction and maybe some coaching or mentoring for the personal interaction?

Coaching: The International Coach Federation (https://coachfederation.org/) defines coaching as “Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”

BusinessDictionary.com (http://www.businessdictionary.com/) defines Mentoring as an “Employee training system under which a senior or more experienced individual (the mentor) is assigned to act as an advisor, counselor, or guide to a junior or trainee. The mentor is responsible for providing support to, and feedback on, the individual in his or her charge.”
